Camp Half-Blood Confidential: Your Real Guide to the Demigod Training Camp – Rick Riordan, Disney Hyperion, (9781484785553), 2017.

Format: Hardcover

Rating: 1-5:  (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 3

Genre: Fantasy

What did you like about the book? Full of inside jokes and references to events and characters in previous books, this guide to Camp Half-Blood should touch a chord with readers who wish they could attend for real. Among other things, it provides insider information about the cabins, the magical landmarks, the training grounds, and nearby wild places to visit. It is presented in a smorgasbord of formats and narrators along with the usual funny snark from Percy Jackson. Examples of entries include a videoconference transcript of Thalia and Leo interviewing Percy and Annabeth’s parents, songs and poems from Apollo, numerous short ads from Pete the Palikos, and an essay on how she designed tiny cabins for the camp by Annabeth Chase.

Anything you didn’t like about it?  Though it is a fun trip down memory lane of previous characters and adventures, there is no new material here unless you count the twelve page teaser from The Dark Prophecy included at the end.

To whom would you recommend this book?  Recommend to the numerous die-hard fans of the Percy Jackson series and spinoffs.

Who should buy this book? Public libraries.

Where would you shelve it?  Shelve alongside your other Rick Riordan books.

Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles?  No.
