Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 1
Genre: Classic, Children’s Picture book
What did you like about the book? The 10 Minute Classics successfully condensed “Moby Dick” very effectively. The illustrations captured the era realistically and added to the horror and powerlessness of the crew attacking Moby Dick. Captain Ahab was dangerously obsessive, but this was difficult to translate to young children, who developmentally and emotionally may not comprehend. The story line was conveyed, but it under-represented a very complicated classic.
Anything you didn’t like about it? I hope that a condensed simplified version of this classic accurately plants a literature seed for children to read the original when older.
To whom would you recommend this book? Parents and children that enjoy our literary classics, and appreciate complicated literature.
Who should buy this book? Elementary school librarians, Middle school remedial reading teachers to encourage classic literature
Where would you shelve it ? Classics, Picture books
Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? No
