King Arthur – Retold by Philip Edwards; Illustrated by Adam Horsepool

King Arthur – 10 Minute Classics,  Retold by Philip Edwards, Illustrated by Adam Horsepool, Flowerpot Press, 9781486712229, 2017

Format: Paperback

Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 2

Genre:  Classic, Children’s Picture book

What did you like about the book? The 10 Minute Classics condensed “King Arthur”  effectively. The illustrations captured the era realistically and the very dark story . Arthur’s unlikely rise to power by removing the sword, eventually assuming his kingship, was a tale of good overcoming many evils. The sinister plotline was outlined, but it was overly simplistic, portraying  the dark ages, the feudal system, etc.  It was only a very brief taste of a complicated classic.

Anything you didn’t like about it? I hope that a condensed simplified version of this classic accurately plants a literature seed for children to read the original when older.

To whom would you recommend this book?  Parents and children that enjoy our literary classics, and appreciate complicated literature.

Who should buy this book? Elementary school librarians, Middle school remedial reading teachers to encourage  classic literature

Where would you shelve it ? Classics, Picture books

Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? No
