Higgly Hen – Axel Scheffler

Higgly Hen (Farm Friends Sound Book) – Axel Scheffler, Nosy Crow, (9780763693244), 2017

Format: Board Book

Rating: 1- 5 (5 is excellent or a Starred review) 3

Genre: Picture Book

What did you like about the book?  Rhyming text tells the story of Higgly Hen who leaves her nest to get some food and finds her eggs have wandered away.  The gouache illustrations add to the fun as the eggs sprout little chick legs and wander off.  Luckily Higgly Hen finds all six eggs and gets them safely back to her nest as they fully hatch.  The book includes a sound button that the reader can press to hear the clucking of a chicken.

Anything you didn’t like about it? The sound button is a bit annoying and many parents will be happy when the battery dies.

To whom would you recommend this book?  Give this to children who enjoy farm stories.

Who should buy this book?  Public libraries

Where would you shelve it?    Board Books

Should we (librarians/readers) put this at the top of our “to read” piles? No
