Bizzy Bear: Do-It-Yourself Day – written and illustrated by Benji Davies, Nosy Crow, an imprint of Candlewick Press, 9780763693282, 2017

Format: Board book

Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 4

Genre:  Picture/Board book

What did you like about the book? This is the first Bizzy Bear book I’ve encountered and I hope to get more!  Bizzy Bear’s text possesses the cadence and rhyme scheme of the familiar poem “Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, Turn Around” to make it immediately recognizable as well as easy to remember for toddlers wishing to repeat the story.  Each page has an interactive element that demonstrates the use of a tool, getting the child involved in storytelling and excited about Bizzy Bear’s project.  But what is Bizzy Bear building?  Use to final push tab to discover what he and his friends have created!

Anything you didn’t like about it? Some of the cut-outs surrounding the interactive tabs are not reinforced and these may not last as long without an extra piece of tape to protect it.

To whom would you recommend this bookRecommended for families with pre-readers; the tabs and wheels will instill a love of reading as they discover the story behind each movement and tool.  Kids who have a curious nature will love this!

Who should buy this book? Childrens’ library collections (public and school)

Where would you shelve it ? Board book collection

Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? You could probably skip the actual reading of this story, but I recommend it for collections looking to bulk up their board books.
