Bears and a Birthday – written by Shirley Parenteau, illustrated by David Walker, Candlewick Press, 9780763688127, 2017

Format: Board book

Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 4

Genre:  Picture/Board book

What did you like about the book? This installment of Parenteau’s “Bears on Chairs” brings these lovable and caring characters into a story of a birthday celebration. The soft illustrations pair well with the rhyming text as the bears make a cake and wrap a gift; big bear’s smile at his surprise demonstrates how rewarding a little thoughtfulness can be!

Anything you didn’t like about it? All aspects of this sweet tale were wonderful!

To whom would you recommend this bookRecommended for toddlers who enjoy bears or families seeking a gentle tale.  Those in search of birthday stories will also love this!

Who should buy this book? Childrens’ library collections (public and school)

Where would you shelve it ? Board book collection

Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? If you want to pick one of the series, I highly recommend the original Bears on Chairs as this not only has an opportunity for counting, but problem solving too!
