Rating: 1-5: (5 is an excellent or starred review) 2
Genre: Fantasy/Fairytale Retelling
What did you like about the book? With the new Beauty & the Beast movie having just come out, this book has great timing. It has a gorgeous cover too. I enjoyed the setting twist and giving “Beauty” a better reason to go off into the woods- to hunt and provide for her family.
Anything you didn’t like about it? I didn’t feel connected to the main character, Yeva. At times it seemed to draw a little too much from the classic tale, causing an imbalance for me as a reader. It also took too long teasing out the Beast(s).
To whom would you recommend this book? Fans of Beauty & the Beast, fairytale fans, or those looking for Russian folklore-inspired books.
Who should buy this book? Librarians and booksellers would do well to buy this because teens who are crazy about Beauty & the Beast or fairytale retellings will love this. They will also likely see the cover and be drawn to it.
Where would you shelve it? Fantasy
Should we (librarians) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? If you need something to read until you see the new Beauty & the Beast movie then yes. Otherwise, this title can wait.
