The Sea Lion (The Lighthouse Family) – Cynthia Rylant, illustrated by Preston McDaniels, Beach Lane Books, (9781481460255), 2017

Format: Hardcover

Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 4

Genre: Animal fiction

What did you like about the book? In the latest entry of the Lighthouse Family, fall is coming on when one morning the family discovers a baby sea lion asleep in Seabold’s big armchair. They are overjoyed as Whistler and Lila were hoping someone new would come into their lives. The baby sea lion, Topper, told them his mother had dropped him off to be safe and she would be back for him soon. Once again the soft pastel illustrations are just so soothing that this would make a very nice bedtime story.

Anything you did not like about this book? No.

To whom would you recommend this book? Those who have read the six previous stories about the Lighthouse Family will not want to miss this one.

Who should buy this book? Public and elementary school libraries

Where would you shelve it? Juvenile fiction

Should we (librarians) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? Only if you have read the other Lighthouse Family books…
