Playground by Miles Van Hout

Playground by Miles van Hout, translated by Ineke Lenting, Lemniscaat Publishing, 9781935954514, 2016

Format: Hardcover

Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or starred review)  4

Genre:  Picture book

What did you like about the book? In this book, the journey is even more fun than the destination. The author follows 2 children as they make their way to the playground. The illustrations are such that children can use their fingers to walk along the path with the children. They climb trees, cross a river, go past a busy anthill and jump from cloud to cloud. It’s a video game in a book. Children will love the interactive way they follow the children. The children are drawn as line drawings, along with all the other creatures in the book. When they finally arrive at the playground, it is a bare page except tor a swing set. They decide to go back home the way they came.

Anything you didn’t like about it? I liked everything about the book. It also is the kind of book that fosters creativity and imagination in children.

To whom would you recommend this book?  This would be a fun book for pre-school and kindergarten aged children.

Who should buy this book? All children’s libraries

Where would you shelve it ? Children’s Books

Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles?  Yes

Reviewer’s Name, Library (or school), City and State: Sandra Pacheco, ESL teacher, Washington, D.C.
