Helper and Helper – Joy Cowley and Gavin Bishop

Helper and Helper – Joy Cowley and Gavin Bishop, Gecko Press, (9781776571055), 2017.

Format: Hardcover

Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 5

Genre: Animal fiction

What did you like about the book? Lizard and Snake are not only best friends who live together but they also have a business known as Helper and Helper for which they charge “Big Help – One Egg, Small Help – one beetle”. Sometimes they quarrel but they work things out by visiting Wise Tortoise who lives in the people garden. When they travel Snake slithers while Lizard walks so they call it “withering”. There are many little adventures that the two share. They are sweetly humorous enhanced by the wonderful illustrations of Gavin Bishop.

Anything you did not like about this book? Not a thing.

To whom would you recommend this book? This would make a nice read aloud to younger elementary school children. Also recommend to kids who like animal stories like Frog and Toad by Lobel or the Little Bear stories by Minarik.

Who should buy this book? Public and elementary school libraries

Where would you shelve it? Juvenile fiction

Should we (librarians) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? Very close to…
