Gum Luck (The Gumazing Gum Girl!) – Rhode Montijo with Luke Reynolds, Disney Hyperion, (9781423161172), 2017

Format: paperback ARC

Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 4

Genre: Mostly graphic novel

What did you like about the book? Gabby Gomez loves to chew gum even though she is not supposed to; her father is a dentist. In the first episode of Gum girl, the disobedient Gabby is chewing her last piece of gum, blowing such a huge bubble that it touches overhead wires transforming her into a superhero. In this episode, poor addicted Gabby is kidnapped by an evil chef who resents her because gum is what brought about his downfall. She also may have a cavity due to her gum chewing and needs to visit her Dad, the dentist. The action is non-stop, Gabby is a real, fun heroine; the simple, pink and black illustrations create a very good story.

Anything you did not like about this book? No.

To whom would you recommend this book? Of course you are going to give this one to those who liked the first story starring Gum Girl (Chews Your Destiny) but also to kids who like very unique super heroes and graphic novels.

Who should buy this book? Public and elementary school libraries.

Where would you shelve it? Juvenile fiction or graphic novels

Should we (librarians) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? No, but good fun!
