Format: Board book

Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 5

What did you like about the book? Strega Nona was known as Grandma Witch. She lived a long time ago and she could cure headaches and warts and could also mix a potion for girls looking for husbands. But she was getting old so she enlisted Big Anthony to help her in the house and garden. Big Anthony was big-hearted but not too brainy. He thought he could perform one of Strega Nona’s spells to make endless amounts of pasta in the pasta pot when Strega Nona was gone. But he missed the final part of the spell that caused it to cease. This story was first published in 1975 and has lost none of its charm. Tomie dePaola’s signature artwork is wonderful.

Anything you didn’t like about it? Not a thing.

To whom would you recommend this book? This is a great storytime read.

Who should buy this book? Public libraries and day-care centers

Where would you shelve it? Board books

Should we (librarians) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? If it is possible that you have not read it, yes, or just for a trip down memory lane.
