Format: Paperback

Rating: 1- 5 (5 is excellent or a Starred review)  3

Genre:  Picture Book

What did you like about the book?  This retelling of the classic fairytale will appeal to toddlers and preschoolers.  The bright expressive illustrations really bring the story to life for younger children. The ugly duckling is grey with rosy cheeks and a bright blue beak and feet.  Reassuringly, throughout the story, the mother protects and defends the so-called ugly duckling to the other farm animals. “He’s my baby, and I love him.” As in the classic, the ugly duckling grows up to be a beautiful swan. This combination of fun text with some word balloon dialogue and bright illustrations make this a nice version for story time.

Anything you didn’t like about it?  No

To whom would you recommend this book?  This would be a good story time version for preschoolers.

Who should buy this book?  Public libraries

Where would you shelve it? Picture books

Should we (librarians/readers) put this at the top of our “to read” piles?
