61y3bskw7hl       Monstress: Awakening (Volume One) by Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda, Image Comics, 2016. ISBN 9781632157096

Format: Paperback

Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 3.5

Genre:  Fantasy

What did you like about the book? Gorgeous, lush creatures and settings, including droll multi-tailed cats, distinguish this woman-centered steampunk/art deco fantasy. Maika Halfwolf, an Arcanic, a survivor of the war between humans and Arcanics, escapes her abductors and is on a quest to understand her self and her destiny. Flashback, first person narration and cryptic details make the story a tense but absorbing read. Maybe it’s just me, but I found the story almost impenetrably convoluted. However, it’s so beautiful and mystical it’s worth a try.

Anything you didn’t like about it? The story line is hard to follow.

To whom would you recommend this book?  This is for mature readers who love high fantasy.

Who should buy this book? Public libraries

Where would you shelve it ? Adult graphic novels. It’s rated M (Mature).

Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? Yes, if you like woman-centered epic fantasy
