Rating: (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 4
Genre: Adventure, Animal, Children’s Picture book
What did you like about the book? I liked each pages’ artistic adventure, paired with the simple dialogue command of “Stay in Line”. As Little Why walks through the book, he illustrates the all too familiar childish repetition of “WHY” and the unintended consequence for not listening. The lavish illustrations and emotions of Little Why (and an accompanying blue bird) highlight why he longs for the special attributes of the wildebeest, giraffe, cheetah and alligator. Thankfully the mother’s patience and her love circles back to why Little Why is so special and the book ends on a special self-esteem note. Very observant children can also follow a family of bugs in the grass each page for additional fun!
Anything you didn’t like about it? No
To whom would you recommend this book? Pre-school centers, elementary libraries, parent and grandparents that hear “Why” countless times!
Who should buy this book? Preschool Centers, Elementary School libraries, animal lovers, parents building self-esteem in their children.
Where would you shelve it? Children’s picture books, animal books, self-esteem books
Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? Yes
