Genre: early chapter book
What did you like about the book? This book will give children a good chance to learn all about the care that newborn puppies need. When Lauren’s dog, Baylee, has a litter of 10 puppies, one is smaller than the others and needs special care. Lauren and her parents hand-feed the pup every two hours until it’s strong enough to eat on its own. Lauren’s parents are firm about selling all the puppies, even little Bitsy, whom Lauren has grown to love. Lauren and her new friend Sam try to find a way to keep Bitsy. This is a sweet story with an attractive cover and winsome illustrations.
Anything you didn’t like about it? Lauren and Sam made some questionable decisions in their efforts to find a way to keep Bitsy. Of course I’m glad that they ultimately got to keep the puppy, but it would have been more realistic if they had faced even some mild consequences for their actions.
To whom would you recommend this book? Read Alikes? Recommend to children who love animals who are reading early chapter books. Also recommend the Animal Rescue Centers series by Tina Nolan.
Who should buy this book? Elementary schools and public libraries should find this series popular.
Where would you shelve it ? Early chapter books or series books.
Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? No.
