Genre: early chapter book
What did you like about the book? Nine-year-old twins Becky and Alex are delighted to learn that their family will be staying at a cottage on the beach during their vacation. They are especially happy because they can take along their new Cocker Spaniel puppy, Cooper. There are lots of things to do at the beach, and lots of places for a curious puppy to explore. One day, Becky and Alex get permission to take Cooper by themselves for a walk to explore the cliffs near the beach. But a curious puppy, a narrow path, and some sibling rivalry can be a risky combination and suddenly the Coast Guard has to come to Cooper’s rescue. All ends well in this sweet story, with attractive illustrations and sympathetic characters.
Anything you didn’t like about it? No, this is a particularly strong installment in a very pleasant series. Alex and Becky own up to the part they played in Cooper’s predicament, which lends some realism to the plot.
To whom would you recommend this book? Read Alikes? Recommend to children who love animals who are reading early chapter books. Also recommend the Animal Rescue Centers series by Tina Nolan.
Who should buy this book? Elementary schools and public libraries should find this series popular.
Where would you shelve it? Shelve with the early chapter books or series books.
Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? No.
