Rating: 1-5: (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 2
What did you like about the book? The first ten pages provide basic rules and terminology of the game and major events in football history listed chronologically. The rest of the book consists of profiles of twenty-two current NFL players. Each profile is two pages long. One page is summarizes the player’s career up to present day. On the facing page is a full-page colorful photo of the player with a quote, such as “Antonio Brown can’t be contained.”
Anything you didn’t like about it? It isn’t clear what criteria the author used to choose the players that are profiled. Though intended as an overview of the stars across the league, the profiles are weighted toward specific teams with two Seattle Seahawks, two Dallas Cowboys, three Carolina Panthers, and three Kansas City Chiefs. Other than one photo (no profile) of Tom Brady, there are no players from my local team, the New England Patriots.
To whom would you recommend this book? Maybe to football enthusiasts from grade 4 – 6 who live in areas where some of the profiled players are located.
Who should buy this book? Given the ephemeral nature of the information and the inconsistent coverage among the teams, I wouldn’t recommend it to a library.
Where would you shelve it? Shelve in 796.332 with other books about football.
Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? No.
