Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 4
Genre: Realistic fiction
What did you like about the book? [Spoiler alert] Micah and Janie have been friends forever. But there are secrets and limits in their relationship. And for Micah, it is more than a friendship. When Janie starts going out with Ander, things become strained between them. Then there is a fire and Janie disappears. Micah cannot remember the details. The story is told in alternating narration by Jane and Micah, and also alternates between before the fire and after. Popularity, bullying, divorce, drinking, sex, rape and suicide make this a tense and suspenseful read. The author’s lyrical voice of Janie is quite moving.
To whom would you recommend this book? Very much like the unreliable narration in We Were Liars by E. Lockhart.
Who should buy this book? High school and public libraries
Where would you shelve it ? Teen fiction
Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? No
