Format: Hardcover Picture Book

Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 4.5

What did you like about the book? Tek is a cave boy but he has a tablet and a game box and he spends all day and all night long on them, never coming outside to play. Tek’s parents and friends try everything to get him to come outside but nothing works – until….Big Poppa, the village volcano, erupts. The eruption shoots Tek and his phone, tablet and game box out of his cave and into the sky. He crashes down to earth. He discovers the Big Beautiful World! McDonnell’s charmingly cute illustrations done in pen and ink and watercolor illustrate the story perfectly. The book is designed as if it were a tablet.

Anything you didn’t like about it? No.

To whom would you recommend this book? This would be a fun readaloud and in a themed storytime could go with It’s a Book by Lane Smith and Bad Kitty Does Not Like Video Games by Nick Bruel.

Who should buy this book? Public libraries and K-2 libraries

Where would you shelve it? Picture books

Should we (librarians) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? The design of the book, McDonnell’s illustrations and its subject make it very difficult to resist.
