What did you like about the book? In an indirect way, this is a book about caring for our earth. Children will understand this message through the actions of the giant who destroyed everything in sight until there was nothing left to destroy. When his only pleasure in life, a little yellow bird, was set free, the giant realized that he needed to fix what he had broken. He rebuilds the forest and after years, the forest is back with all the animals and birds to fill the skies with song. His little yellow bird is back and is finally not lonely any more. The illustrations of the giant are wonderful, showing the scale of the giant to the world. The author also captures the emotion of the little bird that stopped singing when the giant put her in a cage so she could sing to him whenever he wanted. It shows the thoughtfulness of the giant who set the bird free, when he realized that he had caused the bird’s unhappiness by caging her.
Anything you didn’t like about it? I liked everything about the book
To Whom Would You Recommend this book? Older children ages 3-8 will understand the gravity what happens to the world when people only think of themselves and destroy the environment. This is a good class for a discussion in an early elementary school class.
