51vsgaffezl      Hey Diddle Diddle (Re-Versed Rhymes), Melissa Everett, illustrated by Mary Manning, Flowerpot Press, (9781486708758), 2016

Format: Hardcover

Rating: 1- 5 (5 is excellent or a Starred review) 2

Genre: Picture Book

What did you like about the book?   The illustrations are full of colorful expressive animals and have child appeal.

Anything you didn’t like about it?  The additional rhymes that follow Mother Goose’s original lack the ordinal’s whimsey and rhythm.  The new verses seem to just randomly throw things together.  “Hey diddle daisy, Now start to get crazy, The hippo can dance on her toes. The fridge flew a kite/ in a pink sky, And the buffalo’s hair is in bows.”  The introductory text does not flow well at all, ”Hey diddle dilly, It’s time to get silly, Like Mother Goose likes to do/We’ll start with her verse then make up our own/Maybe you can make up a verse, too.”

To whom would you recommend this book? I wouldn’t recommend this.

Who should buy this book? Large public libraries

Where would you shelve it?  Picture Books

Should we (librarians/readers) put this at the top of our “to read” piles?  No
