The Star Spangled Banner, by Peter Spier, Random House, 2014

Format: Picture

Rating: 3

Genre:  history

What did you like about the book? The illustrations are great. Each page has a line from the Star Spangled Banner and there are multiple pictures that interpret the line. It is great for understanding diversity and acceptance of all.

What didn’t you like about the book?I would have liked the book more if the illustrator had stopped at the first stanza. It continues on to illustrate the second stanza and for a teaching tool, it wasn’t’ as effective.

To whom would you recommend this book.Young children, English language learners

Who should buy this book? The children’s room in any library

Where would you shelve it and why? Picture books

Should we (librarians) put this on the top of our “to read” piles?sure
