Summer at Forsaken Lake by Michael D. Beil

Summer at Forsaken Lake, Michael D. Beil, Knopf Books for Young Readers, 2012

Format: Fiction

Rating: 5

Genre: Mystery/Adventure

What did you like about the book? This was an adorable and fun summer mystery!  I loved the characters and the plot.  Beil weaves the main story of solving the mystery of ‘The Seaweed Strangler’ together with multiple subplots that help drive the story.  There is very little down time in this book and the ending is a perfect fit to the story

What didn’t you like about the book? There was very little that I didn’t like about the story.  However, it seemed like there could have been more detail about the movie that the children were making at the end of the book.  It was mentioned quickly several times but it was not given as much detail as other events.

To whom would you recommend this book? This is a good read alike for fans of the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew books.  It is also a good read alike for Missing on Superstition Mountain by Elise Broach

Who should buy this book? Public Libraries

Where would you shelve it and why? Juvenile Ficiton

Should we (librarians) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? If you are looking for a fun summer read or if you are a fan of Beil’s other books.
