Jersey Angel by Beth Ann Bauman

Jersey Angel, Beth Ann Bauman, Wendy Lamb Books, 2012

Format: Fiction

Rating: 4

Genre: Realistic Fiction

What did you like about the book? This was a very fast paced and quick read.  This would make a good beach read this summer!  The main character Angel has many great qualities, but is at a turning point, senior year, that confuses her and leads her to do stupid things.  Angel is a very likeable character that many teen girls can relate to.  I also loved the small town characters with their weird little quirks and odd names like Cork and Tofu Bart.  Despite the Jersey Shore-like hook ups and break ups Jersey Angel is a great coming of age story set in today’s society.

What didn’t you like about the book? The inside flap is a little misleading; it makes it sound like the story takes place during the summer before Angel’s senior year.  However, only the first 50 pages or less are set during the summer while the rest of the book covers the fall and winter months of the school year.  I also didn’t like how the author gives the reader the impression that all teen age girls spend their high school years sleeping around.  I also think the story should have lasted through the end of the school year rather than end at Christmas time, I feel like there was more of the story to tell.

To whom would you recommend this book? This book would be good for readers who liked Sometimes it Happens and Ten Things We Did (And Probably Shouldn’t Have)

Who should buy this book? Public Libraries

Where would you shelve it and why? YA Ficiton

Should we (librarians) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? Not and essential read, but it is a fun choice for summer!
